Theatre Suburbia 2014 Mellerdrama

web site

Theatre Suburbia, the longest running all volunteer playhouse in Northwest Houston, is looking to produce a new Summer Mellerdramer in 2014.

Our theatre has produced crowd pleasing mellerdrammers each summer for many years. We have worked with published scripts like Little Nell the Orphan Girl by Nelson Goodhue, Deadwood Dick by Tom Taggert, Rascality on the Rig by William S Davis, and Curse of an Aching Heart by Herbert E Swayne as well as unpublished works by Eddie Cope, Paul Hager, Dave Brandl and other local writers.

Theatre Suburbia invites the playwriting community to submit new unpublished scripts for consideration. Deadline for submissions is March 1, 2014.

To qualify for consideration, the scripts must conform to the following guidelines:

• The script must have a running time between 90 and 120 minutes.
• The script should have 2 acts with one intermission.
• The main characters (villain, hero and heroine) should make their stage entrances within the first 10 pages of the script.
• The script should contain from 8 to 12 characters. Characters must be a minimum of 10 years old. Remember: children can be difficult to cast and this may affect final selection.
• The scripts should contain asides (in mellerdrammer fashion) for the characters. The villain should the most, followed by the hero and heroine, and remaining cast should have a few. The asides help generate the audience responses for the main characters -boos and hisses for the villain, oohs and ahs for the heroine, and of course cheers for the hero.
• This is to be a family type show so absolutely no vulgar, offensive or suggestive language is allowed.
• Set requirements should be simple with a minimum number of locations (house, yard, street scene, etc) because the show is to be performed in the round and the popcorn must be easily cleaned after each performance.
• Any agreed to production can be subject to Royalty, and will be subject to written contractual agreement between Playwright and Theatre Suburbia.
• Author may, at the theatre's discretion, have limited input into the producing of the script. The director and Theatre Suburbia have final authority on the production i.e. casting, set etc.
• The script should be submitted to
Theatre Suburbia, Inc.,
attention Doris Merten,
4106 Way Out West Dr,
Suite N .,
Houston, TX 77092.

No later than March 1, 2014. If the script is to be returned if it not accepted, please enclose a self-address envelope for the return.

• For questions or clarifications a message may be left on Line #4 for Doris, at 713-682-3525 or via e-mail at info@theatresuburbia.org. attn: Doris Merten. We welcome your scripts.

Fly-By-Night Theatre full-length & one-act play submissions

web site

Fly-By-Night Theatre is always on the lookout for new works. And though we prefer to work with artists local to the North Carolina Triad area, we are happy and willing to work with like-minded artists anywhere.

We exclusively do work that is new and has not been performed before. We especially love challenging and edgy pieces.

We are active collaborators. We are not going to rewrite your piece for you, nor are we after any authorial credit or future production percentages or any of that nonsense – but we are a process-oriented group. Please just understand that going in.

If we agree to work with you on your piece, we will pay you a small stipend. We are really open to any length. Full-length plays (75-120 pages) are your best bet, but we'll look at one-acts as well. We tend to favor plays that are ambitious in form and content over the standard family/relationship squabble, but we'll look at anything.

HOW TO SUBMIT: Send us a brief synopsis (anywhere from a sentence to a page) and the first ten pages in format of your play, each in PDF format.

Send submissions to FlyByNightGreensboroSubmission@gmail.com

Due to the high volume of submissions we have received, submissions are now accepted from February 1st thru April 1st ONLY. Submissions submitted any time other than the specified dates will not be eligible for consideration.

SEEKING ONE ACT TO BE PRODUCED AT MN FRINGE

No web site available

Colfax Theater is looking for a play for the 2014 MN Fringe Festival.

Posting is for a play between the times of 45-60 mins
Ages 8-70 Comedy, Dark Comedy, Politically Charged, Drama
3-10 actors in the show, any race, gender, sexual preference...it doesn't matter

What does matter...the writing! The Process! The Cast! and The Team to make it happen!!!!!!

We are  Colfax Theatre, we have been around for about 5 years. During the school year we produce classical children's theatre in south Minneapolis, but the summer is when we delve into more serious thought provoking work.

The last two years we have produced successful productions at the MN Fringe Festival, we are hoping we do it again this year.

2013 we did a dramatic comedy about standardized testing in the school system as a parody to Mamet's classic Glengarry Glen Ross, with 13 year old girls talking like Chicago Business-Man. We posted great numbers in attendance, somewhere between the top 15th most attended show.

2012 we produced a show called Nevermind 1940's Rosie the Riveters living in a society and trying to survive the day...a great dramatic piece. CBS online named us one of the top "Hometown Teams" to see.  And we were the 8th most attended show in the fringe.

So we are taking submissions until March 10th, please keep it to under two plays per person.

I just want to be clear, we are not in the Fringe yet, but we hope to be, and if our number is called during the lottery process, we will produce a show this year in 2014 MN Fringe Festival.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to read every submission.

Over Here Theatre Company is seeking submissions of ten to fifteen minute plays for ObamAmerica

web site

Over Here Theatre Company is seeking submissions of ten to fifteen minute plays for ObamAmerica, a festival of new writing to be produced at Theatre 503 in London in the spring of 2014.

The festival, which will run 27 May to 7 June, is about life under the Obama administration, looking at all aspects from political to personal. Barack Obama is a powerful and charismatic figure, one whose election promised great change and provided hope for a difference to American society and the world at large after eight years under George W Bush.  Did Obama fulfil those dreams of the American people or has he offered more of the same?  Has foreign policy changed?  Race relations? How have President and Mrs Obama affected the way society sees African Americans?  Is he really on the side of the poor or caught up in the machinations of Capitol Hill? What about his controversial use of drones and the assassination of Osama Bin Laden? Not to mention: Edward Snowden, Bradley (Chelsea) Manning, Hilary Clinton, the Occupy movement, George Zimmerman, Syria and ObamaCare.

ObamAmerica will explore a wide variety of viewpoints and issues through thought provoking and entertaining short plays.

Over Here is accepting submissions from both new and more seasoned playwrights. Playwrights need not be American but should have an ear for the uniqueness of American speech patterns and a good knowledge of the United States. Although this is not a paid opportunity, selected plays will receive a full production.

Submissions should be sent in PDF or Word Documents to overherescripts@btinternet.com.

Deadline is 15 February 2014.

Please note- we are looking for new plays that fit the specific theme and directly reflect on Obama’s presidency.
For more info: http://www.overheretheatre.co.uk/

Theatre503 became the smallest theatre to be awarded an Olivier award in 2010, when The Mountaintop by Katori Hall, an American writer, won Best New Play.
This seminal production which transferred to the West End, eventually led to a Broadway production starring Samuel L Jackson and Angela Bassett.
For more info about Theatre503: http://theatre503.com/

Over Here Theatre Company was founded in 2001 by expat North American actors, writers and directors to perform new American writing in London. They produced a series of political comedy sketch shows, Channel 53, as well as the plays American Dream and Gringo by artistic director Lydia Parker at the Union Theatre and New Wimbledon Studio. Over Here continues in its mission to produce quality work about American life for British audiences. Productions will alternate between new North American writing and older, rediscovered American work.  As there is a strong community of expat Americans theatre practitioners in the UK, the theatre company will employ them whenever possible to lend authenticity and experience to the productions.

Stone Soup Shakespeare seeks 10-minute plays

web site

Green Shows traditionally were the prelude to the evening’s main performance and included several of the performers from that evening in any number of entertaining activities.

Green Shows can be: musical or a variety act, a summary of the play, a small skit or scene being “tried out” to a fresh audience, a scene honoring a specific date or audience member or a sharing of any sort.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s “Shakespeare in the Parks” Green Shows are scenes written and performed by summer students (all high school age).  Ashland Shakespeare Festival’s Green Shows are primarily local musicians performing a free show for the public in the downtown area to encourage and promote the Festival’s evening events. St. Louis Shakespeare Festival’s Green Shows are largely summaries of the evening’s performance to help guide audiences into understanding what they are about to see.

The Competition
We are looking for 10-minute (ish) plays that are inspired by a line, a scene, a character or the entire story of As You Like It. We encourage writers to think of the various styles of Green Shows that exist at present, but most importantly we want it to be new work.

We are looking for something inspired by Shakespeare, but beyond that is open to interpretation.

Play submissions are due by February 15, 2014. The winning play will be announced April 1, 2014.

Any questions you have about the competition can be sent to greensubmit@stonesoupshakespeare.com.

Submission form available online.

14. Each entry will be free from copyright restrictions relating to this Award, and the author will hold the BHTG, its officers, and directors free and harmless from all copyright claims and violations.

15. The BHTG is not a producing organization. No production is connected with the competition nor any prize awarded.

16. Sorry, the Beverly Hills Theatre Guild - Youth Theatre Competition does not sponsor scholarships, fellowships, educational grants, or loans to students or private individuals. Nor does the Beverly Hills Theatre Guild as an organization.

Submission Procedures

1. Each entry must be accompanied by an individual, completed application/entry form. Application forms may be duplicated as necessary. Application forms and Competition rules and Submission Procedures may be obtained by sending #10 business-sized SASE to the address below.

2. Each author must personally sign the application. Entries must be legible and signature clearly the name of the writer(s). The author(s) must sign the entry form. Proxy or agent signatures are not accepted and will lead to disqualification.

3. Bind your entry securely and include a title page with the name of the play, whether it is an "original" or an adaptation/translation from another work, and, if desired, copyright or registration information and date (instead of the author's name, please use "by the author.") On the second page list all characters, time, place, number of acts and scenes, and any other pertinent information such as whether the scripts make use of special effects, e.g., puppetry. Scripts must be bound. A clip holding pages together unfortunately doesn't constitute being "bound". (This is insisted upon for the protection of the script and benefit of the writer. Loose scripts may have pages become misplaced or lost. The competition is not responsible for loss or damage to entries or parts thereof.)

4. Do not show your name, address or any identifying information on any page of your entry. Attach with a removable paper clip, a sheet containing the title of your entry, your name, address, phone number and any other information.

5. To preserve anonymity, all entries will be identified by numbers for judging. All identifying marks will be removed.

6. Submissions will not be returned. This includes either eligible or ineligible submissions. Enclose with your submission a #10 business-sized SASE for our response.

7. You may enclose a self-addressed stamped postcard for acknowledgment of receipt of your entry. Competition winners to be announced on this web site in June.

8. The BHTG is not responsible for loss or damage to entries.

9. No script will be accepted by fax or e-mail. No electronic submissions or correspondence.

10. No entry is returned.

Special Call for Scripts, Fall/Winter 2013–2014

web site

The American Indian Boarding School

Native Voices at the Autry is America’s premier Equity theatre company dedicated to the development and production of new works by Native American, Alaska Native, Pacific Island, and First Nations playwrights.

We are currently seeking scripts that specifically address the American Indian boarding school system and surrounding issues. A part of American history not found in the average textbook, Indian boarding schools were first instituted in the late nineteenth century and operated well into the twentieth century. They were established as a means of assimilating Native American children into the Anglicized, Christian belief system. Many have described the boarding schools as a system of cultural genocide, especially in light of reported abuses that took place in the schools.

Scripts may address the Indian boarding school from either contemporary or historical perspectives. They may focus on the experience of students, families, the boarding school itself, or on related issues stemming from the boarding school system. We invite engagement with topics such as the continued imprint of the boarding school on Native American families and cultural memory; the ongoing effort to preserve Native languages and religious practices in a post–boarding-school era; or parallels between the failures of the Indian boarding school system and the problems that plague our school systems today. Other ideas might include stories of success brought on by access to education; the World War II Code Talkers or other Indian leaders or activists who came from the boarding school system; or the struggle to reconcile assimilation with the pressing need for cultural preservation.

Please note that we only accept submissions written for the stage or theatre by Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and First Nations artists.

Full-Length Plays (60+ pages)

Selection Process: Full-length plays (60+ pages) received by February 15, 2014, will be read and evaluated. Select scripts will then be sent to a committee of nationally recognized theatre artists for further evaluation. With their help, Native Voices selects up to five plays for workshops and readings. Playwrights will be notified in May 2014.

Jane Chambers Student Playwriting Contest 2014

web site

Submission Guidelines

The Women & Theatre Program of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education invites submissions from female playwrights for the annual
Jane Chambers Student Playwriting Award.

The Jane Chambers Student Playwriting Award recognizes plays & performance texts created by women that present a feminist perspective & contain significant opportunities for female performers.  Like the Jane Chambers Award for professional playwrights, this annual award is given in memory of lesbian playwright Jane Chambers who, through her plays A Late Snow, Last Summer at Bluefish Cove, My Blue Heaven, Kudzu, & The Quintessential Image, became a major feminist voice in American theatre.

This competition is open to both graduate & undergraduate students; entrants do not have to be registered in a theatre or drama program to submit. The Jane Chambers Award for emergent playwrights encourages diversity of style & content. All forms of drama are accepted, including solo performance work.  Excerpts from the winning play will be read at the annual Women and Theatre Program pre-conference, which will be held in Los Angeles, California, 2010 prior to the American Theatre in Higher Education Conference (ATHE). A professional playwright will offer feedback in a post-reading discussion with the audience.

Student winner will receive a $150 cash prize & a year's membership in Women & Theatre.

Playwright's Revolution 2014

As Sacramento’s leader of bold, thought-provoking theatre, Capital Stage created the Playwrights’ Revolution. This series of staged readings seeks to identify and develop exciting new plays and playwrights. These new works are brought to theatrical life through a series of staged readings performed by professional actors in Capital Stage’s intimate theatre. Capital Stage invites audiences to take part in the new play development process by attending readings and participating in post-reading discussion.

Qualifications

Capital Stage is particularly interested in plays that fulfill our mission to bring bold, thought-provoking work to the region. Plays must be full-length in any genre: comedy, drama, musical, etc. Translations, collections of one-acts, children's plays and any play that has received a full-scale, professional production prior to submission are not eligible. Plays that have had a workshop, reading or non-professional production are still eligible. Only one submission per playwright is allowed each year.

The Selection Process

Capital Stage’s competitive selection process consists of two rounds of selection. All play excerpts submitted during the first round, averaging 200 submissions, are reviewed. Then, selected playwrights are asked to provide a full manuscript of their play. Finally, Capital Stage invites four to five playwrights to have their work included in Playwrights’ Revolution.

Please note that only full-length plays will be considered. Preference will be given to those plays that are aligned with Capital Stage’s mission to bring bold, thought-provoking work to our community.

How to Apply

Playwrights interested in submitting a play for consideration for Playwrights’ Revolution 2014 should send the following to Capital Stage, Attn: Literary Management, 2215 J Street, Sacramento, CA 95816:

Interim Writers seeks playwrights

web site

Interim Writers Accomplice seeks to unite and support its member playwrights by incubating works in progress, encouraging writers during the creative process, providing a sounding board for ideas, and advocating for them in the theatre community. Members have the opportunity to contribute to and shape programming, hear their work out loud, and build lasting professional relationship with fellow playwrights and future collaborators.   With these endeavors, IW will advance efforts to establish Boston as a leading contributor to the national new play scene and be an accomplice to area playwrights.

How to Apply

IW is looking to bring in new playwrights into the Accomplice with residency beginning as soon as April 2014!

Send application materials in PDF format to IW’s Operations Manager submissions@interimwriters.com

A finished play you consider to be your best work, preferably one full-length play.  If you have submitted to the accomplice in the past, please send a different play than your first application.

Resume or CV

A 1 page letter of interest stating what you hope to get out of the group, what you can contribute, and an artistic statement about who you are as a writer, or what motivates you to write.

Finalists will be asked to meet the IW team for an interview

4th Annual Vittum Prize

No web site available

  1. Deadline: February 14, 2014 (Valentine's Day)
  2. Type of Work: ten-minute, one-acts, full-length plays, children’s plays or musicals.
  3. Eligibility: This is one of the few contests in America open to everyone! We do not discriminate by age, education, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religious views, region of the country, previously published or produced, unpublished or unproduced or anything else you can think of. America is a free country and we encourage other contests to end their practices of selectivity and discrimination. The only thing that should matter to anyone is the play!
  4. Subject Restrictions: Bring it on – your play is the thing! Restage the battle of Actium, bring us to a different universe, enchant us with a full length monologue (think: Shirley Valentine), fill the stage with clutter and props and monkeys swinging from vines . . . or leave it bare. This contest is about nothing more than you—what you write—how you write—and what journey you want us to take.
  5. Fee: $ 0
  6. Notification: we will ONLY notify the top ten and hone down that list until the final day. We do not give feed back or criticism. If you haven’t heard from us by March 17th, please don’t ask. Our palate is clutter enough!
  7. Number of Copies: 1 in Microsoft Word or PDF. If we cannot open it, we will notify you; we also notify you when we receive your work!
  8. Other Requirements: Only one entry per playwright, no exceptions! Put your name and contact information, including email, on the cover page, and feel free to put your name in the header next to your page number if we pay attention to your name for more than 10 seconds, your play probably hasn’t excited us—and that’s what we’re looking for: good writing.  Email your one play (that’s with an underline and in boldface, in case you missed our one restriction!) as an attachment to century21theatre@yahoo.com and include your name and contact information on the cover page along with a brief synopsis. We do not need your CV or lengthy emails, although we may ask more about you if you are a finalist.
  9. What we’re looking for: Move us, excite us, make us laugh or make us cry. Let us enjoy the journey. Let us feel your soul.
  10. Award: $50 cash prize.
  11. This is merely a cash prize for what we deem to be the most moving play we read. We are unable to continue producing plays!
  12. The award winner will be notified on St. Patrick's Day 2014.

The Vittum Award was established to honor the Vittum family, French Huguenots who emigrated to New Hampshire in the 1660s.

ABINGDON THEATRE COMPANY  [BLANK] v. [BLANK] PLAYS
BENEFIT CHALLENGE SERIES: An evening of 10-minute plays

YOU fill in the blanks!

Dear Playwright,

You are invited to submit an original 10-minute play to Abingdon Theatre Company’s  [BLANK] v. [BLANK] PLAYS Benefit Challenge. This effort engages artists who support a theatre dedicated to new plays.

Celebrating our upcoming Off-Broadway production of HELLMAN v. McCARTHY by Brian Richard Mori, we are seeking short plays utilizing the theme of oppositional conflict and adversarial parties.  Use your imagination!  Do you want to write a court case?  Great! We’re looking forward to reading it.  You can also think outside the box: CAT v. DOG, METS v. YANKEES,  SPOON v. FORK.  Opposition is the key in this challenge.

Our [BLANK] v. [BLANK] Benefit Series challenges your creativity to write a short drama or comedy within these parameters:

  • Two characters must have opposing views; the higher the stakes, the better.
  • One character must prevail by the end of the play.
  • Include a character who is age 35 or under.
  • The play is set indoors.  The set is a personal living area (excluding bathrooms, kitchen or bedroom). A courtroom or office area can be replicated.  Set pieces include a table, bench-like seating, 2 chairs and a stool.  If a photo of the set model is not included below, you can request a photo by emailing: mail@abingdontheatre.org.

We strongly encourage original play submissions that are developed for this presentation.

Using your skills and imagination, write an original play that will be presented as a staged reading on the set of Abingdon’s next production, HELLMAN v. McCARTHY by Brian Richard Mori and directed by Jan Buttram. We are seeking plays written in any style that reveal a fresh plot, sufficient conflict and a running time of 10 minutes, maximum. Plays are due at midnight on February 21.  SERIES A performs on Tuesday, March 31 @ 7pm, and SERIES B performs on April 7 @ 7pm. Are you ready? Here are the guidelines. Please read carefully!

GENERAL GUIDELINES:

  1. Abingdon presents the play. We provide the actors, directors, stage manager, rehearsal space and the theatre (the 98-seat June Havoc Theatre at the Abingdon Theatre Arts Complex, 312 W. 36th Street, NYC).
  2. ALL participants are donating their time and talent, and HELPING TO RECRUIT AN AUDIENCE. Our goal is to fill every seat in the 98-seat house!  There is no fee or cost to the playwright.  There is a ‘pay-what-you-will donation’ for audience members to attend the staged readings.
  3. Each playwright and director will be able to attend the staged reading of their script in designated seating.
  4. Every play gets one performance only. A reception will follow the presentation in the June Havoc Lobby.
  5. Playwrights MUST attend the staged reading. Please specify your availability for SERIES A (3/31), and/or SERIES B (4/7). If you are available for either date, let us know that, too!
  6. We encourage you to attend rehearsals, if possible.  The schedule will be determined later.

Please make sure you follow all submission requirements.

SCRIPT GUIDELINES:

  1. Your play must present adversarial parties in oppositional conflict, which is decided by the end of the play. Your play must be set in a personal living space.  A courtroom or office playing area is also available.  Set pieces include a table, bench-like seating, 2 chairs and a stool.  DO NOT set your play in a bedroom, bathroom or kitchen. If a photo of the set model is not included below, you can request a photo by emailing: mail@abingdontheatre.org.
  2. Write for a cast of 2-3 actors.  Your cast must include a role for an actor age 35 or under.
  3. We prefer scripts that can be staged without relying on stage directions. If stage directions are necessary, please keep them to a minimum.
  4. Your script will be presented as a staged reading in accordance with AEA guidelines. Keep production values to a minimum. Costumes are at the discretion of the director and the willing cooperation of the actors. No hand props can be used.
  5. Plays should be in standard script format: 12 point font, 1” margins on all sides, and character names on a separate line. Be sure to number all pages.
  6. Submit scripts in MS-Word - preferred - or PDF format.
  7. Scripts longer than 10 pages – title and character breakdown pages are not counted – will NOT be considered.  Regardless of the number of pages, the running time MUST be no more than 10 minutes!
  8. You may only submit one script for consideration.
  9. The deadline for script submission is midnight, February 21. Up to 16 scripts will be chosen.

HOW TO SUBMIT:

  1. Email your scripts to Bara Swain at Bswain@abingdontheatre.org
  2. Write in the subject line: BLANK v. BLANK PLAYS / Your Name
  3. In the body of the email, send your complete contact information and a one-line summary of your play as well as your availability (Series A and/or Series B).

Little Black Dress INC seeks 10-minute plays and monologues by women

web site

Little Black Dress INK is creating production opportunities for female playwrights through its Female Playwrights ONSTAGE Project; a short-play festival dedicated to producing peer-selected works by women. In addition to contributing to the selection of plays, participating playwrights are able to review and revise their work via online-streaming of play readings, and are encouraged to blog about the process along the way.

Submissions are now being accepted for awesome female playwrights for consideration in this year's festival. The festival utilizes a peer-review process for evaluating submissions, so please make sure to read the following guidelines carefully before submitting:

  • This years festival theme is Planting the Seed. Playwrights are invited to submit short plays and/or monologues written on this theme. In the past we have had great success with short scenelets as well (short plays comprising of a couple scenes, which we can sprinkle throughout the show
  • LBDI strongly suggests you do not submit plays or monologues longer than ten minutes. Keep in mind that in all instances, shorter truly is better.  Plays running longer than ten minutes stand very little chance of making it into the festival, as we strive to produce as many playwrights as possible.
  • Little Black Dress INK utilizes a peer review process for evaluating plays.  By submitting to this fest, you agree to participate in this unique opportunity to help select plays for production.
  • Once our submission window is closed, you will receive a selection of plays to read and score using the LBDI online eval form. You MUST read and submit your evaluations by the required date in order for your play to remain in consideration.
  • Submitted works will be read by participating playwrights and LBDI artistic personnel.  By submitting to the festival, you agree to share your work for the review in this process.
Submission materials must be emailed to LBDI by February 15th, 2014 and should include:
  • The following information in the body of your email:
  • Your name
  • The title of your play
  • Your contact information *It is very important that you use a reliable email address as all correspondence will be done via email!
  • A PDF of your script – please do NOT include your name anywhere on the script!
  • Email materials to submissions@LittleBlackDressINK.org

Top scoring plays will receive a staged reading in either Santa Barbara, Ithaca, or LA.  The final eight to ten plays will then move on to full production in Prescott, AZ this Fall.

2014 Flying Muskrat Theater Company playwright contest - students only

web site

Submit a play to the 2014 FMTC playwright contest, and you could see it produced in August! Be a part of bringing your original work to life on stage! We are accepting One-Act plays anywhere from 9-100 pages, and are taking submissions until February 15th.

Last year, our winning playwright received 5- star write ups from the D.C. area press- so get those plays in, and see what lies ahead for you!

Guidelines & Frequently Asked Questions

  • Must be between 9-100 pages in length, and in One Act (no intermission).
  • Must be an original piece (not performed with any other institution, and your own work)
  • Community appropriate
  • Written by a current student (6th-undergrad)
  • Minimal spelling and grammar errors
  • Follows (or very close to following) the correct format (see below).
  • Must have a cover sheet attached with the playwright's name and the title of the play. A character description sheet must be included, as well as a brief "story of the play."
  • No more than two submissions per playwright
  • Include contact info (name, cell phone number, email) so we can contact you if you win!
  • You must submit by February 15 at 11:59 pm. No exceptions.

The rubric we'll be judging on is here- as is a link to our official rules.
And here's an example of a play in the preferred format- a scene from an original piece we produced in 2012.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I submit my play?
You can click the above 'Submit your play!" button, or email contest@flyingmuskrats.org.
If selected, when would my play be performed? When would rehearsals/ auditions be? Would i get to be a part of that process?
Yes! You would. That's one of the great things about this contest- the playwright is involved throughout the production if they're selected. The plays would be performed on August 7,8, and 9, and the production process would start in Mid-March.
Can i submit my play to other contests?
Certainly. Our only stipulation is that FMTC must be the first place the work you submit is performed.
Is there a cash prize?
No, but we feel that seeing you work performed for a live audience is worth much more than a cash prize ever would be.
How many plays are selected? How are they selected?
We'll select anywhere from 1-6 winners, depending on quality and quantity of submissions, and length of winning plays. Two full-lengths would be too many, but four ten minute one acts would be much too short. We have a panel reading through all plays, and they will provide each playwright with feedback in writing, regardless of selection for performance.
Can my submission be a musical?
Yes! Remember, however, FMTC is on a tight budget. Nothing too extravagant without some serious concessions by the playwright will be able to be performed.
Do my cover sheet, character description sheet, and 'Story of the play' count on my 9-100 page limit?
No. We're looking for 9-100 pages of dialogue.

You’re invited to be a part of “The Apron Strings Project”

web site

Submissions open through February 14th.

Meet Valentina… and Rose.   Just two of the charming and inspiring aprons at the very heart of The Apron Strings Project; a theatrical celebration of women told through the creative contributions of writers, musicians, actors and other artists.

Inspired by a truly historical apron collection, the Apron Strings Project will be a collaborative production based on the stories of people who wore or may have worn them.   Set to take the stage this spring at Riverhead, New York’s historic Vail Levitt Music Hall, the production will benefit both the Vail Leavitt and “The Retreat” a local women’s shelter and support organization.

Begin by taking a look at our beautiful apron collection- just click on “The Aprons” up on the menu bar-  and then pick the one(s) that most inspires you.   You may be moved to write a monologue or create a short scene, to craft a song or perhaps just a melody evoked by one or all of the collection.  Visual artists are also welcome to contribute their inspirations for possible inclusion in the program, the production or to be displayed onsite during the run of the show.

And when you’re ready, go to “The Submission Form” to send us your creation.

February 14, 2014:  Closing date for submissions

March 14, 2014:   Winning submissions will be announced

We are interested in plays exploring important, challenging, and crucial social issues that affect our lives today. Topics can range from today’s international headlines to tonight's interpersonal issues in the bedroom. Both comedies and dramas are welcome.

The PlayFest weekend of staged readings is a direct pipeline to our Signature Series our fully produced mainstage series. We prefer plays that require six actors or less, but will certainly make exceptions for exceptional work. One man or one woman shows are welcome. We want strong, dynamic, compelling stories told with an original voice and a potent theatricality.

In order to qualify for PlayFest a play must:

  1. NOT have received more than two professional AEA productions
  2. NOT have received a Broadway or Off-Broadway production
  3. NOT have received Orlando production in current form
  4. NOT be published for general distribution with the rights held by the Publisher

We will select seven new works to be presented as readings. Playwrights will receive a stipend, travel and housing expenses. We will provide directors, actors, assistant directors, stage direction readers and stage managers. In addition to possible consideration for our Signature Series, some plays may go on to be fully produced at the University of Central Florida as part of our partnership with UCF.

Saturday Night One-Acts seeks THE SISTER PLAYS

The Saturday Night One-Acts (Lee Solomon, Producer) is seeking scripts for the first in its series of themed festivals, THE SISTER PLAYS. Accepted plays will be performed on a rotating basis on Saturday nights at 8 in New York City in March and possibly continuing after. There is no fee to playwrights. Script Parameters:

  • Must be able to be produced on a simple set with tables/chairs/blocks and no complex set, costume, or prop requirements
  • Characters must be 2 females, age range 20s/30s, who are sisters.

Outside of these parameters, plays can be anything, and they can be comedic and/or dramatic.

If you wish to submit, please email Lee Solomon, producer, at leesolomon1026@gmail.com, stating intent to submit, as soon as possible, and please send the script by February 15 (or sooner if possible). Scripts will continue to be accepted after that on an ongoing basis, but submissions later than 2/15 may be delayed in consideration until a later festival. All accepted scripts may also be incorporated into the general pool of rotating scripts for the Saturday Night One-Acts. Playwrights will of course be notified if accepted.

Pause & Play 10-minute plays

web site

Pause & Play is a theatrical event that is made up of original short plays, written by different writers all dealing with the same theme or subject. The pieces are then interwoven to form one cohesive presentation. Each play is rehearsed individually and then the producers put the pieces together a few days before the performance.

WRITERS
We are looking for ten minute plays with two to three characters. We have minimum props and scenery, so please keep that in mind.

THE THEME: HAPPY PEOPLE

More than a specific genre, we are looking for a clear point of view so that each piece will have its own distinctive voice.
